About Trident
Trident Swim Academy is preparing to bring a personal, progress-focused lesson experience to Greater Boston, with a focus on Middlesex County and nearby communities.
Colby grew up swimming, from his own first lessons to competing with Arlington Boys & Girls Club and Arlington High School. He has since taught swimmers in group lessons and one-to-one settings, getting to know the families behind each lesson.
Alongside swim instruction, Colby teaches elementary physical education. Both roles call for the same kind of attention: knowing when to encourage another try, explain a skill differently, or slow down and build confidence.
That is the experience he wants Trident families to have. A child getting comfortable in the water and a teen or adult working on technique may need very different lessons, but both deserve patience, clear guidance, and someone who notices their progress.
His background also includes lifeguarding and lesson management, keeping safety and family communication central to how Trident is being built.
The people behind the progress
Caring instruction takes preparation. These are the standards we are building into Trident before an instructor leads lessons independently.
Multiple hours of in-water training, shadowing, and observed teaching, with practice observing swimmer responses and adjusting cues, demonstrations, pacing, and activities within the Trident Method.
Additional training in teaching techniques, clear communication, child safeguarding, and appropriate boundaries.
Current lifeguarding, CPR/AED, and First Aid credentials, alongside preparation for the facility’s emergency procedures.
Experience working with children, patience when a swimmer feels unsure, and the ability to balance encouragement with clear expectations.
Adaptive Aquatics assignments involve an additional readiness review with Colby. He must be confident the instructor is prepared to support the swimmer’s instructional needs.
Colby’s teaching is also informed by completed training in coaching, youth fitness, and strength and conditioning.
National coaching credential.
Training in age-appropriate youth fitness and exercise.
Foundational strength and conditioning education.
The experience we are building
That approach is formalized at Trident as Dynamic Swim Instruction: a structured curriculum with enough flexibility to change the explanation, cue, demonstration, pace, or practice when a swimmer needs another way in.
Understand the swimmer’s starting point and the family’s priorities before deciding what progress should look like.
Use the Trident Method to give each lesson purpose, with flexibility in how a skill is introduced and practiced.
Explain what is developing and what comes next, supported by planned app access for progress and payments.
